So I had posted pics originally of my poor self black mouse Ralph some of you may have seen. We upon changing of all of their cages and bedding today I was holding Ralph and noticed he's starting to get a lighter band of color going from under his front arm pit area and looks almost like a banded mark, which is stage because he was all one solid color. I couldn't get a clear pic of him as he wanted to run up my shirt to my shoulder instead but hope someone can help me as to what is going on here : / I wanted to breed him to my black self female when she became of age but now I'm not sure. I'm wondering if it'll happen to her now : /

Here he is best I can.

He seems more chocolate than black now that he's getting older, and his belly area seems to have gotten lighter too. What's going on here I'm so confused!

It's just molding - the changing of fur :p Plus, some poorly coloured mice get lighter/browner with age. It's completely normal and nothing to worry about.
I was thinking it could be molting, which now he looks more brown than black, which is unfortunate cause I was hoping for black but I am starting to question that. I guess we'll see how light he gets in a few weeks. I'll probably pair him up with my poor black female anyway in a few weeks to a month, we'll see if she surprises me with some color changing then.

In the last picture he looks more chocolate but I am guessing that is because there's a strong flash/light. Going by the fact he is petshop stock I would be pretty sure he's poor black from the other pictures, poor chocolate would be a quite light brown and only gets to the dark chocolate shades with good breeding over generations selecting for the darkest.

Even if he was to be chocolate you'd still get a litter of at least 50% black (depending on whether the doe carries chocolate)
Actually the last pic was the only pic I didn't use flash, I had to go to my window to get a good pic of the area where the color is changing. My phone camera sucks lol. Well I'm still going to breed him with my doe in month and we'll see what happens :) watch my mind get blown again lol
