WANTED - Sterile female mouse

2671 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Frizzle
I am looking for a companion for my 5-week-old male mouse, and have no desire to breed. Neutering is not an option at this time. It would be great if someone could direct me to someone/somewhere that I can get a sterile female. Atom is lonely!

Have you looked into young female, african soft furs? I think they are more common than sterile female mice. I've considered this myself, but I'm nervous about a wart virus they carry. If you can find some who don't have that, then it might be your best option. Good luck.

Or you could get another male that has already been neutered. Where are you based?

Thank you for the advice! I am in Boise, Idaho. I don't know of any reputable breeders in the area. I got my current three mice at a store that sells for both pets and snake food...which is why I couldn't bring myself to take him back when it became clear that only 2 of the 3 were actually females...

I wasn't sure if a neutered male would get along with an un-neutered male. I've never had anything but female mice and rats! If that would work, I would certainly be happy with that as an option.

I had never heard of African soft furs. I'm going to hit google and see what I can find out.

Okay, off to do more research! Thanks again!

Hello Nat.
Here is a picture of my african soft furs, also known as multimammate mice.
You could introduce them to fancy mice if they are young, but take in mind that they mostly wouldn't become as tame as fancies. They are very territorial which means that they are not so easy to handle and they probably bite without warning if you put your hand in the cage.

I'm pretty confident in saying the wart virus they carry is not transmissible to either mice or humans.

The territorial/biting is dependent on the ASF, I had a bunch and only got nipped once by a nursing doe.
