On the 18th i'm going to be bringing 2 new babies home! in the form of a pair of Champion show line Belgian Hares! :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen:

I cannot wait, i've always wanted one! but stayed clear because theres not a lot of quality breeders around of these guys, but a friend of mine who bred and showed rabbits for 20 years has a close friend from back in those days who still breeds, and amongst those, Belgian hares, i was so chuffed to find out she'll have some unrelated babies available for the 18th from quality show lines, how could i say no?

Yes i will be breeding them, even if its once or twice, but i can't pass up the chance, as long as i can have homes lined up!

Just waiting to hear what colours she'll have, i deffinatly want a red, but she also breeds black tan, so if theres one of those going i might just have to have one of each!

Congrats there needs to be more breeders of the rare breeds like belgians. I just got an astrex doe from a friend of mine. The breeds just about dead in north america all the breeders are either in canada or way in the southern states.

Female - 9 weeks old, still a tad nervous but comes up to you when free roaming and doesn't mind being cuddled!

Male - 4 months old - loves nose rubs, docile and very curious! doesn't have red eyes, thats just the flash!

They are absolutely beautiful, I love Belgian Hares. The male looks just like Hazel from the original Watership Down film

Thank you, they both came from show parents, the black is not show standard, but the male is and would have be shown had it not been for a minor default, he came from 2 black parents, as opposed to 2 red parents and was the only red baby in the litter, i think it may be something to do with colour as to why he can't be shown, but i don't know much about rabbit showing.
As he moults the red should become more richer, will have to wait and see, i hope it does because reds are my favourite and the richer it is the more stunning they look!

They are stunning, I was tmepted by rabbit showing too but don't have the space and dont think I would be able to let any of the babies go either. I have an english spot from show lines and I love the breed, I really like the image of long slim line rabbits. I also ahve a dutch rabbit, his markings are lovely but I'm not as keen on the short stocky body shape.

They aren't hares, they are just rabbits, so because of that they are no different when it comes to handling and taming They are a very hardy rabbit, but have sensitive stomachs, so changing diet is a huge no no!

They are something i've always wanted to keep, but i had worked with one before who suffered terrible neurological problems and respiratory infections and it always made me warey of the breed, but i was told from a friend who bred them for 20 years that i just got bad luck because they are incredibly hardy and out the hundreds she had bred she only ever had one die from illness.... so then i made up my mind and i HAD to have some :lol:

They aren't easy to find and they don't come cheap, but are so worth it!

Only problems are, you may know how powerful a regular rabbits legs are, well its not pleasant getting kicked by a nervous BH and i already have the wounds to prove it, luckily its nothing new to me, so i will not be phased by tantrums :roll:

Secondly when breeding, when the young are old enough to leave mum, you must put them into a small area for the first week or so, as like all baby rabbits when they first find their feet they have outbursts of energy, they bound off the walls to build up speed, and apparently thats how a lot of broken legs happen. So what i will do is have them out in a large area for a while to burn off energy, then they will go into an indoor guinea-pig cage or something for the first week.

Yes i like the slim lined rabbits i must say, although they're not as cuddly

I've always had lops and a Rex, i have boarded hundreds of rabbits of all shapes and sizes before so i always got a good idea of what i liked, never had one of these guys though, but are always something i liked the look of.

I had 2 rabbits as of last year, a lop and a Standard Rex, both males, one neutered and one not, they lived together and spend everyday together for 6 years, and they were the most important thing in my life...Sadly i lost them both on xmas day last year and it still pains me to think about it...

I sworn i wouldn't have any more rabbits for at least a while yet, as i didn't feel i'd be able to spend time with them to bond, i didn't feel i wanted to get to know other rabbits thats how bad my grief is :|

When i was offered these guys, for some reason i didn't feel hesitant, i think its because they are so un-rabbit like, not sure but i don't feel reminded by these two
Felt kinda bad at first that i was replacing my boys, but then i thought, well i'm not replacing them at all, i'm replacing the empty space they left behind

Thanks everyone, they're certainly lovely, and the babies are just big fluffy balls of gorgeous-ness

They're at that stage now where they are just finding their legs, i sat watching them for ages last night running up and down the hutch and having sudden spurts of power then bumping into the side :lol: they're sweet, then they all ran out of energy pretty quickly and fell asleep, going to be hard selling them in 6 weeks time though! :roll:
