I will (hopefully) have a litter of mice in a month or so, and I was researching culling and culling methods.

Only problem is, how do you pick which mice will live and which get culled? Obviously you cull the males, but if you don't have pedigree or purebred mice, which males do you pick? As I know they don't show their colours until a week or so?

Help!

You can tell colours earlier than a week broadly speaking, although not shade of course. If you're breeding for show some faults may be obvious - poor markings, white, blunt or missing tail tips, and of course poor type (small mice with thin tails and narrow skulls, for example). If you are test breeding your mice to see what they carry, you should still be able to weed out the 'wrong' colours - for example if your blacks carry PE and you produce doves it will be obvious from birth. Without knowing exactly what you're working with it's difficult to be more specific but I hope that might be of some help!
