How did you choose which colour and variety to breed?Cos I've been looking at all the different colours and cant decide
Do hobby breeders even need to choose a type? :?
And do you need to know genetics before you breed mice?
Argh it all so confuzzling
I'm going to start breeding soon
And I dont have a clue about genetics. I'm kinda understanding the basics.
But really I'm just guessing what I think would have an interesting outcome.
I think Breeders just have a preference to what are their favourite colours/variety.
If you're show breeding you need to pick a variety (or several) and stick to them. You can't mix other varieties in unless it's a complimentary and necessary outcross. If you're breeding pets then you could breed any mouse you wanted to any other mouse as long as they're healthy etc. Genetics would help you know what colours and markings etc you would produce. Although this may not be important, it can prevent disappointment (for example someone who thinks breeding a siamese and a champagne will produce pretty babies, when they'll get blacks!). If you just want to produce as many colours as possible then you'd also need to know genetics so you could choose complimentary colour genes to get a range of babies.
