Fuzzy,Hairless, and Semi - of either

2892 Views 19 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  jessierose2006
I picked up a mouse the other day and i am quite confused about what to say he is.

Curly Hair (where he has it)
Straight Whiskers
Hair is very thin only thick area is on his head.

I wanted to say he was a texel but he doesnt have enough fur. You can see the skin very clearly through his fur. I took pics of him and his texel brother. you can see the difference big time.

And more on that note- How do you determine a fuzzy or a semi hairless mouse? Can you breed HL to Fuzzy without issues or will that result in more fuzzy?
It looks sick, not hairless or FH. :(

But at the same time, I have a weird 'mutation' in my texels where some of the babies will lose their hair, become completely hairless, and then grow it back at about 8 weeks old. So maybe it's that.
again... its not sick.

it is a runt and it is barely a month old. and eating great. It is hunched somewhat because my bathroom is freezing where i take the pictures. After I sat down he was very active and talking to me. there is nothing wrong with it other than its fur is very thin.
Please stick to the question asked. Thank you.

Is it some defect in the genes that cause them to loose the hair and then grow it back? And i have had them for 2 weeks and he hasnt lost or gained any fur so i didnt know if maybe he was a defective fuzzy or hairless.
Runt = sick
Again? You never said 'he isn't sick'. Don't be so snappy. Between this, and your other post, people are going to stop wanting to help you.

If he's been that way for a while, like I said, he's probably sick. You said he's a runt, and by definition runts are sick/deformed/malnourished/etc.

Agreed, on all counts, if the animal is that small at that age something is wrong with him.

And if you ask for other people's opinions don't be angry when they are given and you don't get the answer you want.
The question wasnt does he look sick the question was what is he.
The answer is, sick. He's a sick rex.
If you don't like other people's opinions, then don't ask for them.
i agree with the others, rex or texel, and sick in some way. It does not look like hair loss due to genetics...it looks like illness related hair loss...that IS answering your question. Hair loss can be caused by allergies, mites, mange, ringworm, among other things.....
I don't think he looks "sick" personally, just very, very runty, but if you post pictures of mice with an obvious problem you have to expect an emotive response.

I would wonder if his hair problem is related to his lack of physical development. In another thread asking what he is you mention you're thinking of breeding him, but that is not an advisable move because he definitely does have something wrong with him. He will not improve anything in your mice. You mentioned the ears in your other thread, but they just look like normal sized pet-type ears on a very small mouse.

Rhasputin, everyone has the right to breed whatever mice they like, we can only advise against it, not dictate ;)

After I sat down he was very active and talking to me.
I've just realised... you said he's talking to you? Mice are pretty silent to our ears, are you sure he doesn't have a respiratory infection? The only times I've ever heard mice make noise is when they're fighting or they've been ill with an RI.

True true.

*Oh yes. I would definitely not advise breeding from him.
Agreed....I would definitely recommend not breeding him! And agreed with sarah on his "talking"...it is usually a respiratory infection (sometimes excitement can either hide or exaccerbate symptoms..so they can be noisy or quiet at different times).
yes i understand that but he doesnt look sick as say the "monster mouse" did he looks to me as you said just a runty mouse his belly is full and he is super alert and investigative.

So you think that maybe since he is such a teeny guy and obviously growing slower than the others- (that were in with him it was like a litter or 12 and he wasnt the only tiny one) that he isnt some kind of poor fuzzy or anything? just that his hair is growing at a slower rate.

ok. do you think his fur will ever grow in right? i mean you can see his siblings fur is much thicker. And his ears just seemed larger compared to his sibling. But ok i wont breed him but he is a sweetie so i will keep him he loves to lay in my lap.

Another ? --- What is the tell tale difference between a rex and a texel because i thought texels had the kinky type fur?

Just because he doesn't look seriously ill, does not mean that he is not "sick." "sick" can mean SO many different things...

To me, the unevenness of the coat suggests that its not just b/c of a slow growth rate...but b/c of something else going on. That doesn't look like a fuzzy coat in any way shape or form.

His coat may or may not grow properly...it depends on the what is causing it to be so uneven. His ears look larger b/c there is no hair around them....ANY mouse that is fuzzy, hairless, fuzzy hairless, or otherwise missing the coat around the ears will look like the ears are larger than a coated mouse of the same size....even when they are technically the same size...or even sometimes when the ears are actually slightly smaller.

A texel is an angora/longhaired rex.
That poor guy, I'm sorry but he does appear to be ill in some shape or form. Sick mice will eat if what is wrong is not affecting their appetite. His coat appears slightly oily and the scarcity reminds me of a cat with a skin condition. I personally would cull a mouse that looked that way but that is just me. I deffinitely would not choose him as a breeder, too small at his age. Why would you get such young mice anyway? I never let any of mine go til they are 12 weeks old.
She did get new photos of him, and posted on another thread. SHE is looking much better now. Probably made it over the 'sick hump' and is on the road to recovery. :)
Well the petstore said they were 4 weeks or very close to it... I personally dont believe it but SHE (lol) is definitely doing 100% better and is getting her fuzz back to her as well (check the lounge)
