I haven't ever bred rats or mice, but I've seen some posts mentioning differences in the culture and ethos of rat breeders/fanciers versus mouse breeders/fanciers.

Could someone please fill me in on the differences?

Well, the only big difference that I know of, is that breeders of mice often cull their litters to improve conditions for the rest of the little (and the Mum), where rat breeders never cull unless absolutely necessary. But you can't really compare that, because rats fare much better with big litters than mice do.
I've never bred rats, so I can't tell you if there's anything else.

rat breeders tend to lean heavily towards the pet keeping side of things.A quick scan of forums and social media groups will show a large group of rat moms with furbabies. They don't openly discuss culling, frown on breeding rats with unknown lines and frequently require some sort of contract to be signed before you can have a furbaby.Mice breeders have stock and colonies rather than individual furbabies.Culling is common and reasonably open.Mice are often bred in uniform cages designed for mass production rather than the elaborate multi shelved affairs rat breeders have.Contracts are almost unheard of.You do of course get people with the rat type of ethics in mice and vice versa and anything inbetween.
