Just an idea

Is it possible/good idea to make a special section where you can see the colours and markings are available for ex. BEW, PEW, chocolate, variegated ect. so that each member can post one post with photos of that colour/marking so that new members could look at one thread named "Chockolate" or "Red" and see if the mice there are something like their mouse, to help them identify their colour/marking. Also fun to see many mice in your favorite colour.

I do realize that there are like million of choices but perhaps it is ok if you think the threads will be too long that each member has only one post per thread and max 2-5 photos each (that you can edit if you want to change photos). And if a mouse is both Fawn and marked her photo could be in both "Fawn" and "Marked" threads.

Just an idea, to make a collection of colours and markings but still you can always see the orginal owner of the photos because the forum name and signature alwayas follows each post. Just something that I would enjoy very much....perhaps someone else?

I think its been done on enough different sites that it would duplicate what is already out there. The only exception would be a discussion of areas where colors or marking types are called by different names or where standards are significantly different. Even in England, the standards have changed in the last 50 years, but a lot of the books still print the old info.

A good discussion of the health needs of mousies would be more useful, like what you should have on hand as far as first aid, palliative treatments, cleanliness standards, living conditions, food dangers, things like that.

I think it's a good idea.People should have access on this site to info they require without having to look on other sites .I like how the l&scrmc have done theirs. There is the problem of colours being labelled differently depending on country.

I like the idea of bieng able to access the colour info on this site. When I was trying to find info about mice colours I had to trawl through lots of sites  . It would also be usefull to have lots of pics of different mice all in the same place.
Could there also be included pics of mice regarding type, size, ears etc so that a newbie like me has a point of reference.
Maybe it would be helpful to have good and not so good examples of show type mice to help guide us newbies???
Just a thought :D xx

the only problem with that is some varieties excel in size and type and others genetically can never be superb. Most pale selfs have fabulous size, type and ears. Most darker ones fail in that department. If you looked at a pic of a good pew but kept fawns like me you would be very disappointed if you expected them to turn out anywhere near as good as the white.

Oh, would it be poss to include the size and type for other mice as well as big selfs?
Are things like the ear placement and tail set the same regardless of colour??
Its just that when you haven't had much hands on experiance of good show mice it can be a bit confusing to begin with to really know what you should be looking for
I know that these things will...i hope...come with experiance.
I was just thinking of other people like me who are just starting out and for now are having trouble telling their a*** from their elbow so to speak :D

All things are not equal between colours. Some varieties have a much poorer chance of winning than others but people keep mice for different reasons. For some it's all about the winning.Others keep varieties that they just like or are more challenging.Comparing a cream and a dutch would be like a shire horse and a shetland pony.9 times out of 10 a cream will beat a dutch but just that 1 in 10 chance of producing a top marked mouse keeps the dutch breeder going. If you produce a good dutch it will have a longer show life than a cream.I just keep what I find attractive so I'm battling with porky fawns that are prone to small ears and eyes but I like them so that's ok for me.

But all these things could be included in the guide so that people know that each colour has it's own size and type goals.
I know that other sites have a written set of standards for the different types but I was just suggesting maybe by including pictures it would further help newbies to visually understand what they are aiming for depending on which variety they have chosen to breed :D
Hey maybe it's just me, I have read the standards for various types but I personally am more of a visual learner.
As a new member I am finding the experiance of other members valuable. I would also find it helpfull tho if I could access photos of a range of good and not so good show type mice of various varietys. Things like ear shape and placement, tail set, unders etc.

I think the addition of a colour section is a really good idea and I would like to see it added! :p

My only slight concern is that (although I am breeding towards exhibition standard) it might affect the balance between pet breeders and exhibition breeders, and FMB may be construed as an exhibition website.

Done in the right way, I'm sure that could be avoided though.

I've been wondering whether to ask breeders experienced in different varieties to write an article type post on breeding a specific variety as a sticky - this could be included in the variety guide? I can start it by writing one about breeding doves. It'd just highlight things to look out for (ie pale noses and tail sets, tan vents), things to avoid doing (ie making doves by crossing champagne or argente with silver), if there are any problems if linked with the variety, and what your aim should be (ie doves are pale selfs, so must have excellent type, etc).

I think it would be a neat idea. You can have several pictures of the same color, some pet and some show type. That way people can get a general idea of a color or marking.

**Off to gather some pictures**

Oh brilliant idea! I said to WD the other day on Chat that I was having such a hard time finding good comparison pictures.. With so many shades of the same variety, different sizes, shapes, genetic codes etc etc and said someone/we should start up a section for just that.. hehe!
